Obama, McCain set to duel over economy ... REPORT: "The presidential candidates will duel over the economy this week, with Republican Sen. John McCain touting proposals he says will stimulate job growth and Democratic Sen. Barack Obama discussing economic security for families. Kucinich Putting Finishing Touches to Articles of Impeachment Against Bush

12.11.07 -- 7:49 AM

By Reno Gazette Journal

Touching on issues ranging from Yucca Mountain to the Patriot Act and the war in Iraq, presidential hopeful Dennis Kucinich spoke to a crowd of several hundred people in Reno Saturday.

Despite a steady snowfall outside, a standing-room-only crowd packed into two meeting rooms at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center to hear what the Ohio Congressman and Democrat had to say about issues he's most closely associated with: the environment and opposition to the war and the Bush administration in general. Those expecting Kucinich to deliver harsh words about the president weren't disappointed, as the half-hour campaign speech soon turned to talk of impeachment.

"On the way over here, I was reading a 50-page document that relates to Articles of Impeachment for the President of the United States," Kucinich said to a standing ovation. "And I want you to know that I'm actually preparing this document for submission to the House."

Kucinich said under the current administration, citizen's rights to due process and fair trial are in jeopardy.

"This is a moment when we're called upon to reclaim our country," he said. "You give me your vote, I'll give you back your country."

Kucinich also discussed how his concern for the environment would shape his presidency if he were to be elected.

"Think about this. The government has an engine of sustainability so that the Department of Transportation focuses on developing mass transit solutions. The Department of Housing and Urban Development develops green housing with natural light and passive solar. The Department of Energy incentivizes the production of wind and solar and green energy," he told the crowd.

But most of those on hand weren't there to hear about global warming.

Bill Cantella of Reno made his way throughout the crowd, handing out Kucinich pamphlets and stickers simply reading "Impeach," while others wore shirts and held banners bearing the same sentiment.

Cantella said Kucinich's "everyman" appeal draws him to the candidate.

"The most appealing thing about him to me is that he's not connected with special interests, international corporations and he does not accept campaign contributions from corporations or PACs." Cantella said. "He's not connected to the military industrial complex, oil companies and health insurance companies that rule our lives."

He was quick, however, to point out that shunning such donations could, in fact, hurt Kucinich's chances in a race populated by high-profile candidates like Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama on the Democratic side.

"That's probably his biggest problem," Cantella said. "Because you have to have a lot of money to win the presidency of the United States. "

Kucinich's wife, Elizabeth, who was raised in England, spoke about the perception that her husband traditionally has been seen as a fringe, extremist candidate.

"There's a kind of thought police in Washington that tells the people of the United States that they're on the fringe but they're not," she said. "Dennis really stands with the people of America right squarely on the issues. It's the other candidates on the fringe that actually pose themselves as mainstream."

After the speech was presumably over, Kucinich jumped back on stage to get in one more thought; this one on Yucca Mountain.

"Under President Kucinich, Yucca Mountain is dead," he said.

Dennis Kuchinich is the only sane voice in politics [with allowances for Ron Paul].

That's actually a very scary thought. But at least it means there's a glimmer of hope.

If there is any justice in this world [or any left in this world, would be a better way of putting it], he would be the next president. The US is in really bad need of a reality check.
It's ok to go to war on false pretexts
it's ok to ignore the laws of the country
it's ok to torture
it's ok to destroy the economy and the dollar
it's ok to never have to justify anything the executive does
it's ok that insurance companies make money over the lives of the insured
it's ok for corporations to do everything they damn well please
it's ok for banks and hedge funds to run the economy into the ground by playing lottery with investor's money
terrorism is the freakshow of the day but it's ok to eat genetically modified foods, to destroy the environment, to refuse to invest and research alternatives to fossil fuels

when did this happen? Who was asleep at the switch and turned the US into the Soviet Union overnight?

The US really, seriously, needs a reality check.

Dennis Kucinich is a true AMERICAN. The lying anti-american CORPORATE-OWNED media will not acknowledge him because if he gets elected they will loose their FASCIST RULE OF AMRICA. I too believe they will have him assassinated. Money and power mean more to them than life itself. All one has to do is tally up all the deaths that have occured in the past half century and they will dwarf the deaths combined of man's total history. Just WWII ALONE, caused by FASCISM. The marraige of big buisness and government is always bad for the people and especially bad for a Democratic republic like the U.S.A.

"Ron Paul is just another big oil candidate."

Care to explain that assessment?

I'm a libertarian woman, actively supporting Ron Paul (up to the primary anyway. As an officer in my party I cannot vote for in the primary and participate in our convention.), Gravel, Kucinich and Steve Kubby of the LP. They are the only ones talking any sense. While I'm not generally in agreement with many of the issues/policies Democrats and Republicans find important, I think it incredibly short sighted to let a party label hinder your support for the best all the parties have to offer.

Good for Mr. Kucinich for keeping the possibility of impeachment in the public eye. Indeed, he seems to be the strongest player where the issue is concerned.

I'm really getting sick of this crap. Dumbacrats like Kucinich playing off like our president, the president of the United States is a criminal like Sadam Husein. All for selfish political gain and to hear a group of consipiracy junkies cheer for him. People like this are hurting this country, making us look weak in the eyes of the world, and making us look like a bunch of wackos.

I was disscussing this very thing in OohYa Chat's Free Chat Rooms earlier today and arguing with a group of liberal left wing nut jobs all saying that Bush is Hitler, Bush is a liar, Bush is a criminal. All I have to say is grow up and have a little respect, if not for the man, at least for the office he holds.

The 60's are over, you missed it, sorry about your luck. Stop trying to be a hippy you prius driving vegetarian urine drinking wannabes.

Dennis Kuciich is speaking a large majority of American's thoughts out loud: clearly, concisely, and courageously. He is my dream candidate, and I will in no way allow the MSM's push to marginalize him keep me from voting my conscience. This is the one who we need for President! I urge every one of you who believe as I do to send contributions to this campaign. Let's get him elected!

Is Kucinich a neocon? If George Bush is impeached Dick Cheney becomes the official president instead of the shadow president. You've got to impeach Cheney first! What is he thinking?

Hey Mr. Completely Out of the Loop, Kucinich has ALREADY put forth impeachment articles against Cheney, which are sitting collecting dust in committee. Call John Conyers' office. Call Nancy Pelosi. DO something. They both need to be impeached, before the election, regardless of the election, and most of all, to ensure there IS an election.

George, true so very true. Somewhere along the line we became very stupid as a country and believed in our politicians. And like cowards give them power, glory, money, fame, slightly soiled cigars and believed they would do what is right for us. Ya know we thought oh they are American they love their country. Give me a brake these bastards care about nothing but keeping the really really rich guy good old boy network in power. The amazing thing is we the people are too scared to over through. Or we the people still believe in the Kennedy speech. What a piece of shit the Kennedy's where by the way. Whatever the reason is we the people are week cowards and the big companies and their buddy politicians along with the layer's and special interest groups are all having a laugh at the rest of the American people.

December 11, 2007 11:53 PM | Reply

Yes, they will, but Dennis Kucinich will not. I think that has been apparently obvious. He has never said anything just to get elected. Most politicians would be afraid to say that they support gay marriage and decriminalizing marijuana, even if they really did support these things. Hillary Clinton's advisers tell her not to take a strong stance on anything and to stay neutral. I want someone courageous enough to say what's really in his heart and to honor the large majority of the people's wishes as a public servant and IMPEACH!!

To not impeach sets a precedent for administrations to come that they can get away with anything, as this administration has done.

By Ron Paul believing Government shouldn't regulate industry or anything other thing, he is allowing the polluting oil companies to do whatever they want with no regulations no matter what damage is done or how it affects the rest of us. It's obvious that some things, especially greedy corporations, need to be regulated. We just need a truly good President (Kucinich) to protect us all from these corrupt criminals.

Ron Paul would limit or try to repeal various environmental protection laws and regulations, including the Clean Air Act, the Soil and Water Conservation Act, and the use of devices that protect the "bycatch" of sea life:

(these are his bills)
H.J.RES.104: To disapprove a rule issued by the Environmental Protection Agency relating to proposed revisions to the national pollutant discharge elimination system program and Federal antidegradation policy and the proposed revisions to the water quality planning and management regulations concerning total maximum daily load.

H.R.3735: To disapprove a rule requiring the use of bycatch reduction devices in the shrimp fishery of the Gulf of Mexico.

H.R.4423: To amend the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act to provide that the Gulf of Mexico red snapper fishery shall be managed in accordance with such fishery management plans, regulations, and other conservation and management as applied to that fishery on April 13, 1998.

H.R.2504: A bill to amend the Clean Air Act to postpone for one year the application of certain restrictions to areas which have failed to attain national ambient air quality standards and to delay for one year the date required for adoption and submission of State implementation plans applicable to these areas, and for other purposes.

H.R.7079: A bill to repeal the Soil and Water Conservation Act of 1977.

H.R.7245: A bill to amend section 404 of the Federal Water Pollution Control Act to restrict the jurisdiction of the United States over the discharge of dredged or fill material to discharges into waters which are navigable and for other purposes.

Go Dennis! Kucinich is great!

December 12, 2007 2:25 AM | Reply

Edwards and Hillary have voted for the Iraq War authorization - for the Patriot Act, they both support the domestic terrorism bill which recently passed the House, they support the torture bill and they support the free trade agreements. Dennis addresses the crisis middle class Americans face because of outsourcing and the absence of affordable health care. There is one and only one true Democrat in the field and more Americans are becoming aware of that fact every day.

You are an absolute idiot "Go Dennis Go" in saying that Ron Paul is just another big oil candidate. I guarentee that if Kucinich gets the nomination(and I fully support him and hope he does cause he is the only real DEMOCRAT nomination worthy of it) that he will not cut all ties to oil, it is virtually impossible to immediately do so. It's a process that will need to be pahsed out over the next 20-40 years. If I had my way I would have Ron Paul/Dennis Kucinich running together in '08. Fuck Red vs Blue, we need more than 2 parties.

December 12, 2007 7:35 AM | Reply

Hahaha you're comment is so absurd. The world has no respect for us now, because they know Iraq was a war for oil OR a war for Israel. The world would respect us if we had a president that made ethical decisions regarding international policy. It's better than "making us look weak in the eyes of the world." The world will never think we are weak, we have the largest nuclear arsenal in the world. So why do we need to invade countries with NONE just to make ourselves look 'strong', whatever that means.

December 12, 2007 10:40 AM | Reply

Actually, Dennis already introduced articles of impeachment against Chaney, H.R. 333, earlier this year, but it hasn't gotten enough support for a vote. This article actually does strike me as odd because Dennis really understands the fact that Chaney is the biggest problem here.

Anyhow, Dennis is not perfect (no one is) but he is sincere, politically courageous, compassionate, and cares more about substance than appearances (unlike most politicians).

you're right, george w. bush is never wrong about anything. i'll think of you when i'm eating a tofu burrito and washing it down with urine while i vote for kucinich.

there's a slight possibility that many americans do have respect for the position bush has... that's probably why they want him impeached.

your comment is ridiculous, but by all means keep posting. i'm greatly entertained by your idiocy.

you will find out how crooked they are. Especially when you see the prisons fill up with simple people that disagree with them. You really don't have a clue do you?
People like you are the problem with our country. Can't except your Buddy Bush is really a very undesirable person and the only thing he wants from you is your right winged VOTE and for any other thing he has no use for you.
