New Poll Shows Tight Races in N.H., McCain Catches up With Romney

Only 33 percent of likely Republican voters and 42 percent of likely Democratic voters say they have decided definitely on a candidate in the Jan. 8 New Hampshire primary. Democratic Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama remain in a close race, while on the GOP side former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Sen. John McCain are tied. McCain, who is focusing heavily on New Hampshire, has gained recently at the expense of former New York Gov. Rudy Giuliani, whose strategy is to score big in big-state contests after Iowa and New Hampshire.

The University of New Hampshire telephone poll for CNN/WMUR-TV was conducted Dec. 27-30. The sample of 439 likely Republican primary voters has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.7 percent; the sample of 521 likely Democratic primary voters has a margin of error of plus or minutes 4.3 percent.
